Student Council Minutes - 06/11/06

Absentees:

Borna, Oscar, Matt M, Steph

Prefect System

Last week, Barr had made suggestions about forming a two-tier Prefect body, with the higher tier having greater consultative powers.

These ideas were discussed this week and rejected because:

Granting a greater consultative role to the Prefects would undermine SC.

Thought of a 'Head Boy Team' is sickening

A two-tier system would increase division in the year.

Action:             Barr will soon start consultation on the issue with the Prefect body and Senior Management, but will mention the opposition of SC to his ideas for change.

The Nature of Student Council

Members expressed dissatisfaction at the insufficient importance of SC. The following suggestions were made to address this:

Using the newly rediscovered SC board.

            Updating the website

            Making sure minutes are made.

Reintroducing the Soap-Box feature of SC meeting.

Action:             Jonny Barclay was nominated to redesign the SC website.

Barr and Tom F will organise minutes until Christmas, before a

permanent Secretary will be chosen from the Lower Eighth.

U8th Common Room

Council members in the U8th made requests for the following changes to the common room:

            Vending machines to be reintroduced

Computers to be placed in the small private study rooms.

Actions:            Contact to be made with the newly formed Common Room Committee

Further Issues

Members brought the council's attention to the following issues which will be more fully debated in future:

Problems remain with the new keyfob system on St Hilda's gate - Mr Jaine to be consulted again.

Some teachers still tell pupils off for drinking water in lessons. We should verify that there is no school rule against drinking water in lessons.

There are not always enough computers around the school in completely silent rooms.

Problems of security remain, in light of the recent theft of mobile phones from changing rooms.
