Fizzy Drinks (joint meeting with the 6th form forum)
Mr May and Mr Boddington were invited to speak on the subject of fizzy drinks at SPS. They suggested that the school was putting across a confused message in championing healthy eating whilst serving fizzy drinks (among other unhealthy foods) in the tuck shop and vending machines. Consumption of fizzy drinks can help cause diabetes, obesity and unnecessary litter. There were also concerns raised over the effect soft drinks had on Pauline attention span and behaviour (these drinks contain various E-numbers). This debate was diligently and, at times bitterly contested. The Council agreed that there is not enough choice in the tuck shop and vending machines, and there are hardly any healthy alternatives to soft drinks, crisps and chocolate. The point was made that if soft drinks were made unavailable within school, Paulines would not be stopped from bringing them in and consuming them on the premises.
A vote was taken on the motion 'The sale (but not the consumption) of fizzy drinks should be banned within school for a trial period of a month' This was defeated by one vote.
The council would like to thank Mr Boddington, Mr May and the 6th form forum for
coming.
