Student Council Minutes - 12/12/05

1.   Black and White

  • The editor provided feedback on the recent issue.
  • The Council noted Luke O'Brien's critical article and agreed that it should submit a formal response in the next issue.

  • Action:  Ben Gray

2.   Issues pending/to be discussed next term

a) Fizzy Drinks

There was general uncertainty about how far the issue had been debated/resolved. The Council recognised that the issue of whether or not Fizzy Drinks should be sold or not at SPS had become part of the broader "healthy eating" debate, but felt further clarification is needed

b) Eighth Form Lates

It was felt that there were still issues to pursue, particularly whether U8th need to be in school for 1/2   if they don't have a lesson. It was agreed that the issue needed further debate before raising the issue formally.

BJO'K informed the Council that CAPS would be happy to hear any ideas the Council might have re- the whole system.

c) Water Fountains

Those in the locker area still need fixing

d) Bicycle Theft

In the wake of several thefts this term, the issue of security should be discussed

e) Junior representation.

The issue of increasing junior representation on/access to the Council was raised. BJO'K informed the Council that this has been an ongoing concern of the Council since its inception. It was agreed that links with the 6th Form forum should be maintained and encouraged, and that ways should be sought to give the 4th/5th Forms more access.

It was recognized that the e-mail facility was more effective that the old "suggestion box" (the whereabouts of whose key still remains one of the great Student Council mysteries).

It was pointed out that the Council once held an open-meeting "soap box" session in which anyone could address the meeting on any issue. Perhaps this should be revived.

f) The Student Council Constitution

BJO’K pointed out that the Council’s constitution has remained unchanged since its inception. Was now a good time to look at it? Should membership be confined to the 8th Form. Should U8th have to stand for re-election? Should the method of election be re-examined?

g) Fob access to the school

h) 4th Form Rugby
