Student Council Minutes - 30/01/06

  • Security

The Council had been asked to consider ways of improving security. It was generally felt that this was not a topic on which it has much expertise, but it was suggested that, to increase the deterrent effect, there should be more signs advertising the presence of CCTV cameras

  • Spam E-mails

The Council supported Mr May's suggestion that a locking feature be introduced for pupil accounts. It recognised the possible drawbacks, but felt that those who leave their computer unattended and locked for a long time should be prepared to find that it has been rebooted when they return.

  • Ultimate-Frisbee Games Half

The Council decided to ask Mr Jaine whether this games half could be introduced next term.

  • Post-AS period for the L8th –

Mr Wilson outlined to the Council what had happened last year and the current thinking re-this year

U8th members of the Council  provided feedback about last year's post-AS period. The following points emerged

  • University sessions were very useful, and should be increased;

  • More time should be devoted to work on The Personal Statement – examples of such statements were felt to have been particularly helpful

  • Finance courses were useful, and should be maintained;

  • Given there are 3 instead of 2 weeks this year, the number of Open Days should perhaps be increased to 3;

  • More involvement in Charity work should be available;

  • It was generally felt that the academic teaching had been the least successful element of the post- AS period. Was there a case for not starting A2 courses and teaching things off-syllabus, aimed at interesting pupils, rather than starting them on the next round of exam  preparation?

  • Perhaps this would be a good time to arrange visiting speakers?
