Science Conference 2014

Science Conference 2014

Once again St Paul's hosted a conference for students to present original research through talks an posters. On 7th March 2014 students from the UK, Japan and Germany gathered to discuss ideas and show their results.

The idea for the conference has its roots in the sister school agreement between Jishukan High School (declared a ‘Super Science High School’ by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology), Aichi Prefecture, and St Paul’s. Teachers and students from 1 German, 8 English and 16 Japanese schools took part.

After opening speeches, the programme of presentations and talks began, covering an exciting and eclectic range of topics, including: 'An Investigation into the properties of Cosmic Ray Muons' (Radley College), 'Coal from Compost' (Otto von Taube Gymnasium), 'Isolating Glutamic Acid from Kombu' (Meiwa Senior High School) and  ‘Genetic Modification in a School Laboratory’ (St Paul’s).

There were also two poster sessions in which students presented their research and explained it to a large audience of circulating visitors and Paulines. As at any scientific conference, this is where most of the in-depth discussion occurred and where many new friendships were made.

Christina Astin and the Young Scientists Journal recorded the event and some of the papers from the conference will be published.
