Student Council Minutes 26/01/04

Manchester Grammar School

Charlie Thompson has been attempting to set up some sort of correspondence between the SPS and MGS student councils, in order to ascertain the issues which affect MGS pupils, and also to obtain some sort of idea of what the new High Master will be like. MGS has no student council, but its website remarks that the prefect selection process is 'remarkably democratic'. Apart from that, MGS is very similar to SPS, although there is a more liberal policy on uniform in its equivalent of the 8th form.

Sofas Outside the Staff Common Room

There have been various requests for these sofas to return to the space between the Common Room and Theatre. Mr O'Keeffe thought that it might be feasible should any seating become available.

Internet Access in the Music School

Charlie Thompson received an email petition asking for internet access in the Music School to be reinstated. Internet access was removed due to excessive 'illegitimate' use of the computers. The petition states that access is necessary for research whilst using music composition software, which is available only in the Music School. Mr Parry does not share this view, stating that 'use of Internet material for music research can, at the best of times, be spurious, and at the worst, just made up' The Council concluded that there is ample internet access throughout the school, and if access is to be reinstated in the Music School then the petitioners must justify its presence in research for Music-related work.

Astroturf

Chris King spoke to Nick Chambers about an astroturf pitch at SPS. An astroturg is considered in the master-planning ideas, but is not one of the major concerns of the master planners.

SPS Pantomime

The Council would like to see an SPS pantomime as an annual event.
