Student Council Minutes 13/10/03

Universities Advisers: The Council held a discussion regarding the provision of university advice within the school. Concerns were raised over the nature of the help, support and advice given by Universities advisers. Their availability, considering the increase in applicants for certain courses, was also discussed. BJO’K and Charlie Thompson will pursue this issue with the Careers and Universities department.

Detentions for 8th Formers: The Council continues to question the necessity of detentions for 8th formers. Records of detentions given last academic year, given to Charlie Thompson by BT, suggest that 8th formers receive a very low share of detentions, compared to juniors. The Council has noted that academic detentions need not be seen as a punishment, merely as an opportunity to complete unfinished work. However, this is an area which we will continue to examine.

Music School: Some of the musicians out of the student body have called for the music department to offer more provisions for school bands. Specific requests have been made for a PA system and a recording studio. The Council is unsure of the feasibility of these requests, but wishes to support the school’s thriving music scene and as such, supports this request. Charlie Fink will speak to Mr Parry about this.

Soap: Ben Reizenstein has demanded that the soap in the changing rooms should be changed. The current, liquid soap does not lather sufficiently well, and there is strong belief that gel soap would be more favourable.

Astroturf: Mr Jaine agrees that an Astroturf pitch should be built. However, since the school will be rebuilt relatively soon, it is difficult to gauge where to build one.

New HM: In preparation for the arrival of the new High Master, the Council would like to find out about the set up of MGS, in terms of school policies, presence of a student council. Ben Reizenstein will look into this.
