Student Council Minutes - 12/09/05
- Attendance Policy
· It was agreed that full attendance at meetings was essential
· It was agreed that after three unexcused absences members would be replaced. Referred to as a 3-strike policy.
· It was agreed that arriving late to a meeting would not be punished at present, but might be if the problem persisted.
- Election of Student Council members
· The first question proposed about reforming the election procedure was where it should take place and it was decided that the voting should be done in Friday afternoon tutors, instead of Club meetings, as there was less attendance at the Club meetings.
· It was decided that each member of the L8th would be given 10 votes.
· The results of all votes would be kept so that the 3-strike policy could be implemented. This policy was agreed upon by all in attendance.
· ACTION: Hugh Gillum to give assembly to ensure all pupils eligible have the opportunity to stand for election
- Dress code
· There was generally a positive view of the new dress code adopted by the seniors, especially the new L8ths many of whom had immediately reacted to the new freedom.
· The Council welcomed the fact that any suitable tie could now be worn by the seniors.
· It was agreed to invite the HighMaster to a meeting to discuss his opinion of this change to coincide with the end of the 1-year trial period, set up in the spring term last year.
- Bike Rack
· The question arose of how this would feature in the Master Plan although it was generally agreed that the many problems of shelter and security had been discussed thoroughly.
- Pool Table and TV for U8th Common room
· It was suggested that these privileges should be given to the common room
· It was clarified by BJO'K that they specifically had not been put in, when the Common Room was set up as the TV caused unnecessary distractions through the working day and that pool took too long to play in the given time. Further that it was harder to prevent the "loss" of the pool cues, chalks and balls than on a football table.
6. Student Council Information Display
· It was agreed that a document describing the recent successes of the Student Council be displayed in key areas to build awareness and support for the Council.
· These included the board adjacent to the Junior tuck shop
· ACTION: Thomas Glynne-Jones to create this document
- Furniture
· It was noted that the chairs in certain classrooms around the school were very uncomfortable
· ACTION: Joe Bentley to investigate and speak to member of staff and report progress back to council
