Protocols On Attending the Hive

  • Key has to be signed out by a member of staff - e.g. Dr Zetie, chemistry technicians
  • Only trained boys are to go onto the balcony
  • A minimum of 2 people should be present if boys are attending the hive - no boy should be unaccompanied.
  • Anyone with an allergy to bee stings will not be allowed on the balcony
  • Door to be kept closed while hive is being inspected
  • Bee suits to be work at all times
  • Hive to be sedated e.g. with smoke before inspection
  • No-one is to play on the wall or do anything which involves risk of falling
  • Key to be returned promptly once finished with
  • In event of a fire exit through the store room and down the back stairs

As well as basic procedures for inspecting the hive, training will cover elementary first aid for stings and allergic reactions as well as the protocols listed above:
